A good sense of humor works in all conditions. Girl Alone by Rupa Gulab ia a fairly decent attempt as a debutant. It’s a story about a girl Arti, a cough syrup addict from Kolkata, her mother wants her to take up a good job or to get married.
She moves to Mumbai where her struggles begin with her Super Bitch Boss in professional life & wrong men in personal life. Being an English literature student she is a total pseudo intellect snob & expects a similar guy with similar sense of humor in her life. Cough Syrup & music is her remedy to overcome her screwed up existence and henceforth she has used a lot of bands, books, authors, directors & actors as reference to every circumstance she faced.

On her mother’s insistence she also had witnessed few disastrous blind dates with a wild life photographer, software engineer etc who were the regular looser matrimonial ad guys for wedding prospect. And rejected them because of reasons such as wrong pronunciation of the word Lion as Loin.
Arti was always wrong in selecting men, may be because of her expectations, insecurity, attitude problem or bad luck but in spite of her learning’s with past relationship, she preferred to be with someone than single, because it’s better to have Monday morning blues than Friday evening’s.
She had her two best friends as pillers- Jo & Mo, who were also her hostel mates cum soul mates in Mumbai & there chemistry altogether with up’s & down’s in their respective relationships was also a delight to read.
Even though she faced a lot of hard times & good times but what remained constant was her sarcasm & wit to give back.

Like a standard story, this one had a happy ending too. And the message which was loud and clear throughout is that men only want you when you don't want them anymore.
If this book hooked a non reader like me, than definately this piece of fiction deserves a 3 out of 5. And a must read for all single cosmopolitan girls.
